LMS rookie Andy Meyrick left Spa-Francorchamps with a sixth place finish on only his second race in the Kolles Audi R10 TDi this weekend. Sharing driving duties with team mates Charles Zwolsman and Narain Karthikeyan, Meyrick made his first LMS race start and handed over the number 14 car to Zwolsman in seventh place after his racing stint. His team mates completed the remaining laps to bring the car home in sixth place and record the team\'s best result of the season so far.
Sharing driving duties with his two team mates, Meyrick had his first taste of Spa-Francorchamps behind the wheel of an LMS car on Friday, with just six laps in wet conditions. Completing just one flying lap of dry running in the second session, Meyrick was relying on the Sunday warm-up to familiarise himself with a dry line around the 4.3 mile circuit. However, Meyrick saw any hopes of additional laps vanish on Sunday morning, as dense fog enveloped the circuit in the Ardennes Mountains, forcing race organisers to cancel the session.
With the fog cleared, the drivers took their positions on the grid for the 1000km race. Meyrick lined up ninth for his first LMS start; following the qualifying efforts of team mate Narain Karthikeyan on Saturday. Despite his relative inexperience in the car and the dry conditions, Meyrick completed some astonishing opening laps taking the diesel powered Audi up to 4th place until racing was interrupted by a safety car period.
With the green flag given a few laps later, Meyrick found himself in a three way battle down to the first corner, sandwiched between an Aston Martin and a Pescarolo. Nudged to the left by the Pescarolo, Meyrick took evasive action to avoid hitting the Aston Martin, braking hard and flat spotting his tyre in the process. With the consequent vibrations making it difficult to make progress, the Kolles team switched strategy and brought Meyrick in for an early pit stop.
Emerging from his early pit stop in 14th place, the 23 year-old racer made rapid progress through the field. Handing over to Charles Zwolsman after 2 hours and 20 minutes in the car – his longest ever racing stint – Meyrick had surged thought the field to put the Audi R10 in seventh place. Zwolsman later handed over to Karthikeyan, who brought the number 14 car home in sixth place.
Speaking about the weekend, Meyrick said, \"I was really pleased with our progress this weekend. We closed up the gap to the leaders and we worked together better as a team. Making my first LMS start at such a big event was quite intimidating at first, but I really enjoyed the challenge and was very pleased with my pace. We are making good progress as a team and I believe with the progress that we have made we will be strong contenders at the next LMS race\"
